Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child have to sit an entrance exam?
No. If you decide that you would like a place at Ferndale your child will come for a trial day so we can be sure they will fit in happily. We cater for the normal range of abilities.
Does Ferndale have a PTA?
The 'Friends of Ferndale' committee meets regularly to organize various social functions during the year. Recent events have included a Summer Ball, the School Fete, a Disco and Fireworks evening and an Indian Meal for parents and staff. Any money that is raised is used to provide extra experiences for the children or additional resources for the school.
How often can I see my child's teacher?
As often as you like! There are formal opportunities during the year but we believe in being available at any time. Staff gather in the playground at the end of every day when the children are signed off, so it very easy to have a quick word then or to fix up a time for a longer chat.
How much homework is set?
The youngest children are expected to read regularly and learn some key words. From Year 3 upwards more formal homework is set. This gradually rises from 20 minutes a night to around an hour a night for our Year 6 children. There is a supervised after school homework session every evening until 5.00pm for those children in Year 5 or 6 that would like to attend.
Are there any costs in addition to the basic fees?
Some. Bus fares and pre-school and after-school care are regular extras for those who use them (see the fee schedule in this pack). Educational trips are also charged separately and this includes 2 more ambitious residential visits to Paris and the Brecon Beacons for our Year 6 children. You will need to buy uniform and provide a well-stocked pencil case, but books, lunches and transport to and from sport fixtures are included in the fees.
When are the fees payable?
Fees are payable in advance at the start of the term. If paying by a regular Standing Order would be helpful for you, please ask for details in the School Office.
What are the longest hours my child can be at school?
8.00am to 5.30pm if they attend our 8 o'clock Club and After School Club.
How big are the classes?
Most classes are around 12 - 14 children at the moment. The largest size would be 20 children.
What is the mix of boys and girls?
In the school as a whole there is a very even balance. Classes vary a little one way or the other.
Is there provision for Special Educational Needs?
Yes. We have a SEN Co-ordinator who works with staff to identify and support any special needs. We also have a specialist teacher who gives individual lessons to those who need them. These are charged separately.
Are snacks available?
No. Children bring in a piece of fruit from home for a healthy snack at morning playtime. Milk is provided. Children who stay on for Homework or After School Club are given a drink and a biscuit to keep them going.
