The Upper School
The Upper School (Years 3 to 6) continues to offer a balanced curriculum which respects national guidelines whilst taking advantage of the flexibility that is one of the advantages of independence. Thus, we prioritise the teaching of English and Maths, with Science third in the league, but History, Geography, French, R.E., PSHCE and Information & Communication Technology are also individually timetabled. On the creative side, Art, Music and Design Technology all have their place in the curriculum, whilst PE and Games also have their slots in the timetable. Homework is set regularly, gradually building up to about an hour a night for the Year 6 children as they prepare for their exams.
This arrangement means that when they take entrance exams for Senior Schools at 11+, our children are well prepared. Not only have they acquired the essential skills, they have also been presented with a rich educational experience.
Those children whose needs cannot be met satisfactorily in the classroom have the option of some individual tuition at school with a specialist teacher.
As well as the academic side of school life, children can look forward to many educational visits to support their learning including Year 6 visits to Paris and youth-hostelling in the Brecon Beacons.
