    HELLO

I was at Ferndale between 1984 (or 85?) - 1992. I thoroughly enjoyed it and feel it really gave me a great start in life and the tools to hopefully excel later on. I have many fond memories from throughout my seven years there: In Lower 1 we were not allowed past the holly tree in the playground, but often required older pupils to do our shoelaces up which resulted in mischievous undoing of shoelaces and big lines being formed at the holly tree boundary. In Upper 1, we won promotion to the area of playground from the horse-chestnut tree down to the line between the two porta-cabins. Playing marbles was a compulsive part of break-time and played very competitively! In Form 2, we were encouraged to work hard with the incentive of Mrs Welland's weekly distribution of sweets for "stars" earned during the week. In Upper School, we had a fairly proficient football team and it was the highlight of the week for most of the boys. We were one of the few Ferndale teams to manage a victory over St Hughes (a tightly fought 1-0 victory courtesy of a Ben Mace toe-punt!), and I also vividly remember a 7-0 victory over Uffington (because I scored 5 goals!) and a 5-1 victory over St Francis (because our goalkeeper Chris Rendell was so cold he was physically frozen to the spot for their one and only shot!). I remember one day being sent out of Mrs Lamb's art class with Ben Mace and waiting in anticipation for a rollicking as we could hear the footsteps and smell the aftershave of Mr Collinge coming up the stairs, with nowhere to hide! I enjoyed my last year as Head Boy and House Captain of Cotswold and also won the trophy for most "plusses" for the second year in a row. My Ferndale education allowed me to win a scholarship to Abingdon (one of I think 9 scholarships out of our year of 21 - we were quite an academic year). I am still in contact with Matthew Hibberd, Ben Mace, Chris Rendell, Georgina Fox & Rebecca Toll from our year. I had a great 7 years at Abingdon playing rugby, cricket and rowing and was also Head of School. A lot of Ferndale boys went to Abingdon and I believe still do so. I then spent the next 3 years at Durham University and managed to fit just enough studying around rugby and cheap beer to come away with a 2:1 BA Economics. Following another harvest working on my father's farm, I took a gap year in 2002/03, having found an appetite for travelling after spending a summer in India whilst at university. I began by fulfilling a lifelong ambition to watch England "contest" the Ashes in Australia (a typically painful 4-1 defeat!) and spent the following few months travelling around Australia and New Zealand. I then flew to South America and did a crash course in Spanish before travelling through Chile, Ecuador, Peru & Bolivia. For a couple of those months I did a rainforest conservation project in a remote part of Ecuador which was really rewarding. Travelling was a fantastic experience and I hope to sneak off for another escapade or two between jobs in the future. Upon my return, I moved down to London with some mates from Abingdon and got a job at Merrill Lynch working in Prime Brokerage. Currently I still work in Equities (specifically stock loan & synthetic products), but have since moved to Bank of America in Canary Wharf. I have recently sat my last CIMA exam and hope to become a fully qualified management accountant in the next few months. Banking does tend to require long working hours, but it is definitely a challenging and stimulating environment in which to work. It would be great to hear from any of guys I knew whilst at Ferndale.

  • Natasha Blows - contact me

Hi everyone! St.Helens and St.Katharines is great!

  • Natasha Parker-Coughlin - contact me

I was at Ferndale during the last years of Mrs Reeve's tenure and the beginning of the Collinge's, from memory 1978 - 1985. In my final year I was house captain of Vale and Head Girl. My fondest memories of school came from Ferndale; the manners that were drummed into us would seem draconian by today's standards - hand inspection at assembly, posture sashes if we'd had good posture for the week and constant encouragement.

  • Neil Maton - contact me

I was at Ferndale from 1981 - 1985, when Mr & Mrs Collinge were there. Having got used to the rather tedious label of going to 'green pea' (the colour was was miles better than other local schools in the vicinity) it was an excellent school. It really did teach you manners, respect, self discipline, ambition, competition and other great attributes that are significantly missing from many young people today.

  • Nereide Fox - contact me

I left Ferndale in 1991 and joined Tudor Hall in Banbury. I then went to Edinburgh University in 1998 and studied Chinese. In 2002 I joined Deloitte in London and qualified as a chartered accountant. I am currently in China working for a media business and I'm due to return to the UK shortly to find new opportunities. Some snapshot memories of Ferndale for your amusement! There were always two people in the top year in charge of the first aid kit during break time. If you fell over or bruised yourself they would rush out like maniacs and cart you back for dressings and bandages. The performance was usually accompanied by siren sound effects. I also remember Mr John Balley (hope I've spelt that right!). He would tell us he'd metaphorically hang us up by our toes if we spelt important words like "desperate" incorrectly. Classes with him were always interesting. Last one! At the time, one of my very old friends and I didn't get on as well as we do now. I was in art class with Mrs Lamb and queuing up behind that friend for creative advice when I took it upon myself to cut a hole in my friend's jumper. I thought I was going to be expelled as soon as I did it. I was summoned to Mr Collinge's office. I needed to think quickly how I was going to explain a believable scenario for accidental hole cutting. I think I said that I tripped and the scissors snagged on the jumper. Mr Collinge remained very puzzled about the perfect roundness of the hole in poor Georgie's jumper! Great times! Without going to Ferndale, I would have found it very difficult to secure a place at Tudor Hall and be where I am now. Keep up the great work!
